The term

Physical AI (also “embodied AI”) is AI that senses and acts in the real world rather than only processing text and images — the software driving robots, autonomous vehicles, drones, and smart machinery. The recent surge comes from applying foundation-model techniques to robotics, plus simulation (“world models”) that trains machines before they touch reality.

Why it matters to you

If your business has warehouses, plants, fleets, or physical service work, this is the frontier that eventually reaches your cost structure. The nearest-term wins are the same ones digital AI found first: bounded, repetitive, high-volume tasks — picking, moving, inspecting — not general-purpose robots that do everything.

The honest caveat: hardware makes this slower, costlier, and harder to pilot than software AI. A demo of a humanoid robot is not a deployment.

What that means in practice: Treat physical AI like any operational bet. Find the single repetitive physical task with a clear cost, and ask whether a narrow system could do it reliably. Watch the space, run a small pilot if the math is obvious, and discount the humanoid-robot theater until the reliability and cost are proven in a setting like yours.
