Agentic Commerce

What vendors mean: AI that shops and buys for your customers. What it actually means: a coming shift where the customer at your storefront may be a bot acting on a person's behalf.

Industry Applications

The term

Agentic commerce is transactions initiated and completed by AI agents rather than humans clicking buttons — an assistant that researches options, compares prices, and places the order under rules its owner set. Major payment networks and model providers are building the rails (agent-authenticated checkout, delegated payment credentials) to make it work.

Why it matters to you

If some share of your buyers arrives as an agent, the things that win human shoppers — imagery, persuasive copy, brand feel — matter less, and machine-readable facts matter more: structured product data, clear specs, clean APIs, transparent pricing. The storefront tuned for a scrolling human can be invisible to an agent comparison-shopping on price and fit.

What that means in practice: You don’t need to rebuild for bots today, but you should ask a concrete question — if a capable agent tried to buy from you, could it? Structured data, an accessible catalog, and honest specs are the new shelf placement. This is early; track it, don’t bet the company on it yet.
